Eric was a tail gunner in a Lancaster bomber during the second world war and was shot down over Germany on his 14th mission. He survived the crash and spent the rest of the year as a Prisoner of War (POW) before escaping and making his way back to allied lines.
In September 2010 three of us accompanied Eric to Germany to trace his wartime roots. It was a once in a lifetime trip that included meeting people who had seen his plane crash in flames, drinking on the site of the pub he had drunk in at gunpoint and visiting where he had stood with Marshall Zhukov as an honour gaurd.
Visit the LocallyHere site to read Eric’s story and an account of the trip.

you can enjoy it all in the relaxed surroundings of La Bougainville’s open air terrace.
